Jobs Announces SDK for the iPhone
Wednesday October 17, 2007
It feels like I just finished writing that Apple is not likely to have an SDK anytime soon. Well, I guess I'm eating crow tonight. A day after the announcement that Orange will sell unlocked iPhones in France, Steve Jobs has announced that Apple will release an SDK for the iPhone in February. That is fantastic news (Of course, if you follow the unofficial line of Python and Apache, you already have something of an SDK).
All that glitters is not gold, however. Apple intends to allow installation of software by "known developers" only. How you become a "known developer" is unknown. Further, the question remains whether "known developer" status is simply euphemistic for "developers registered with Apple" or for something more litigious like "who should be sued if something breaks". You can catch a bit more analysis on this situation at the New York Times' Bits blog. I shall go back to my crow.
